Yup! We are well into 2017.
~ How’s it going?
~ Is it time for a new perspective yet?
So we have said goodbye to another year~2016.
I call last year… the year of the warrior.
I hope we all learned many noble, honorable, upright, princely, dignified things.
I hope the things you found value in during 2016 are the very things that will bring you delightful treasures.
As I try to wrap my head around the surprises at the end of 2016, I come into the New Year with…
A new perspective!
I am making 2017 the year of the…
Yes… the year of the
HUMMM. Nope, I’ve never seen one.
I’ve only imagined this legendary creature. But I wonder what is the purpose of a Mermaid?
Or those, what do you call them? Mer-dudes? I’m pretty sure there are dudes of the sea too.
What is their lifestyle like?
Lately I’ve been wondering those deep sea thoughts, sort of Mer-Mering, thoughts. Like what is MY porpoise? (Oh, ha, I’m getting really into this).
I mean purpose. Here are some questions I ask.
- How do I feel when I wake up?
- How do I make an impact?
- How do I re-create my self-identity?
- How can I touch others?
- How can I help others?
- How can I be more powerful?
- How can I feel more connected?
- How do I my time here to the fullest potential?
- How do I help to relieve suffering, not only those in different cultures and parts of the world, but to my dear friends?
Yes, this is all so deep; does even a mermaid swim this deep?
Then, I have more questions:
- Can I crawl out of my self-identity and cross the line to experience others suffering?
- Have I built barrier reefs to protect my ego, warrior-like self-importance?
- Do I just stick to my tribe? (Are we so tribal?)
GEEZ! All I want to do is help those that are sad,
Then I remember that, I am a Mermaid, or Merdude ~~~
I have no fear of depths.
I go beyond the Reef.
I am fluid.
(Those humans can be so clumsy.)
And then, I found this very cool video:
Then I found this really cool book:
This book has given me a new perspective.
“We may feel a little nervous and tentative, even defensive, about responding
to the needs of others-particularly those in considerable pain, who make
demands on us, who’s reactions may be unpredictable, who may indeed
remind us of our own vulnerability.” pg. 24
Do we cling or are protected by our warrior (ego) so much that we are content with the comfort it provides?
Well, here is the different perspective ~ Your ego has an appropriate function; often we misunderstand the role of ego and forget to find a balance.
Ramakrishna, the great Indian saint, likened the situation to a coach in which the driver (the ego) sits atop in command of the horses. The owner (the higher Self) sits quietly within. Because the coachman has never seen the owner, he begins to think himself totally in charge. But when the owner makes himself known, quietly but firmly, the coachman, perhaps begrudgingly but ultimately in his best interests, relinquishes his fantasy and becomes content in the role of…Of what?
Of Servant! (pg.44)
So it turns out that when our ego follows the role of servant, it finds joy in the connection with the bigger picture or the “Greater Way of All Things”. When the ego listens to the owner, the need for the ego to control falls away into empathy, compassion and consideration. Service to our fellow Mermaids and Merdudes becomes fluid without the blockage of the ego’s need to control.
So, why a Mermaid?
Mermaid = Balance!
Imagine a mermaid’s world.
Lose the fear of the deep and stay out of the shallow for a day.
GO beyond the reef and GO behind the scenes to GO to the rescue.
This is the year to explore. See the color. Walk in someone else’s shoes. Or wear a fin.
Love the earth and ocean – don’t hurt it.
Secretly watch for SOS.
Be charming, graceful, delicate, fluid, polite, adaptable, and maybe sometimes unpredictable.
This year, Lets go under and see what we can find.
